Botsaris Tower and Lepanto Museum

A historic mansion within the lower fortifications houses maps, paintings and objects relating to the Battle of Lepanto and the Botsaris family.

Our take

Put the 1571 naval battle into context before reducing Lepanto to a harbour monument

Botsaris Tower sits just above the port in the first fortified tier, making it a logical stop before the castle climb. Its collection explains how the 1571 battle entered European memory through maps, engravings and later images. The building also connects the town with the Botsaris family and the political world of the Greek War of Independence.

Opening can be limited and seasonal, so confirm locally rather than planning around an old timetable. The historic interior includes changes in level and may not offer straightforward access throughout; ask in advance if stairs are a concern. Allow about forty-five minutes, then continue uphill through Stenopazaro while the relationship between the museum, harbour and walls is fresh.
