Follow the defensive tiers uphill to understand the harbour as part of a fortified town
The castle is not an isolated lookout. It is the highest part of a defensive system whose walls descend through the old town to the two harbour towers. Walking up from the port reveals gates, bastions and changes in street level that disappear when you drive straight to the summit. From above, the narrow Rio–Antirrio passage and horseshoe harbour become easy to read.
Start early because the climb and upper enclosure have limited shade. Stone, gravel and steps can be slippery, and some edges require attention. Published hours and access may change with conservation work, so check before committing to the uphill route. The road entrance helps visitors who cannot manage the full walk, but parking is limited at busy times.
