Thessaloniki, Vergina, Edessa and Naoussa

Five days combining Thessaloniki with the royal tombs at Aigai, Edessa's water and the wine-and-mountain landscape around Naoussa.

Route overview

A journey worth taking slowly

A history-and-food loop rather than a transfer marathon

The distances west of Thessaloniki are manageable, but the experiences need time. The Museum of the Royal Tombs at Aigai is not a brief display; Edessa works best with a walk beyond the main waterfall viewpoint; Naoussa deserves an evening and a pre-arranged winery visit.

Spend the first night in Thessaloniki without a car. Collect it the next morning and drive to Vergina, using the official archaeological ticket and access information. Continue to Edessa only after a proper visit rather than racing the museum clock.

Naoussa beyond a tasting

Naoussa's Xinomavro landscape is easiest with appointments. Nominate a driver who does not drink, use a transfer, or limit tasting accordingly. The town, Agios Nikolaos park and Mount Vermio foothills make the stop worthwhile even without wine.

Return the car before the final Thessaloniki stay. City parking adds cost and friction to a place better explored on foot and by public transport.

Driving notes

Build in time for unplanned stops, refuel before mountain stretches, and avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar rural roads.

The route, stop by stop

  1. 1

    Thessaloniki

Begin car-free with the waterfront, markets and Byzantine layers. Collect the vehicle only on the westbound departure morning.

    1 night
  2. 2

    Aigai at Vergina

Give the royal tombs and wider museum complex several hours. Check official ticketing and opening information before setting out.

    Day stop
  3. 3

    Edessa

Stay near enough to walk to the waterfall park and old quarter. Wet paths can be slippery, and winter conditions need care.

    1 night
  4. 4

    Naoussa

Reserve winery visits, leave room for the town and park, and never combine tastings with casual driving decisions.

    2 nights
  5. 5

    Thessaloniki return

Return in daylight and drop the car outside the dense centre. Add another city night separately if the flight leaves early.
