A Week Around Halkidiki

Seven days split between Kassandra and Sithonia, with a practical two-base plan that avoids turning every turquoise cove into a parking contest.

Route overview

A journey worth taking slowly

A week needs two bases, not a new room every beach

Halkidiki's coast invites constant movement. Resist it. Two nights near Afitos introduce Kassandra's village and resort life; four nights around Nikiti or farther south make Sithonia a proper stay. The car should expand the choice, not dictate every hour.

On Kassandra, use one full day for the coast that suits the group. On Sithonia, check wind and leave for a chosen beach early. Famous coves have limited legal parking. When the access road is full, continue to a less fragile place rather than creating another lane of blocked cars.

Road timing

Summer weekend traffic can transform the return to Thessaloniki. Do not trust an off-season map estimate before a flight. Fuel the night before and leave a generous margin.

Boat trips towards the Athos coastline operate under their own schedules and access rules; Mount Athos itself is not an ordinary drive-in attraction. Book a legitimate excursion and understand what it includes.

Driving notes

Build in time for unplanned stops, refuel before mountain stretches, and avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar rural roads.

Driving pattern: A two-base loop from Thessaloniki: two nights on Kassandra, four on Sithonia, then direct return. Most local days involve 30–90 minutes of driving.

The route, stop by stop

  1. 1

    Thessaloniki

Collect the car on departure. A city stay belongs before or after the road trip, without paying to park the vehicle centrally.

  2. 2

    Afitos and Kassandra

Use Afitos as a village base and sample Kassandra rather than circling it. Park outside the stone centre and walk.

    2 nights
  3. 3

    Nikiti

A practical north-Sithonia base with supplies, beach access and an old village. Set out early for the west-coast coves.

    2 nights
  4. 4

    Sarti and southern Sithonia

Shift south for the east coast and Mount Athos views. Keep one day unplanned so wind chooses the side of the peninsula.

  5. 5

    Thessaloniki return

Return early outside weekend peaks and never attach the optimistic drive time to a close airport check-in.
