Climb above the harbour for the carved iconostasis that reflects Galaxidi's shipping wealth
Agios Nikolaos dominates the old town without needing a monumental approach. Inside, the carved walnut iconostasis rewards slow attention: its dense figures and decorative work belong to the prosperous maritime period explained at the museum below. Outside, the churchyard gives a useful sense of Galaxidi's compact shape between the two natural harbours.
This remains a working Orthodox church rather than a continuously staffed attraction. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, avoid visiting during a service unless attending respectfully, and never use flash around painted or carved surfaces. Opening can be irregular outside worship hours, so ask locally before climbing specifically for the interior. Pair it with nearby Agia Paraskevi and descend through the residential lanes rather than retracing the quickest road.
