A remote monastery set against the greenest slopes of western Tilos
The Monastery of Agios Panteleimon is worth more than a hurried vehicle stop. The route crosses Tilos towards its sparsely settled west, and the walled complex appears in a greener fold below high ground. A spring, trees and traditional cells surround the church, whose interior should be entered as an active sacred space rather than a photographic set. The annual July feast is important locally and changes the usual quiet completely.
Check current opening and road conditions in Megalo Chorio before setting out. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, keep voices low and ask before photographing inside or during worship. The final road is narrow with exposed bends, while walkers face heat and little guaranteed water en route. Do not count on finding food, fuel or a mobile signal nearby; return with daylight unless you know the road well.
