Climb from Romeikos Gialos when the rock is cool and give the resident deer room to remain wild
The castle is Myrina's organising landmark rather than a single-period monument. Earlier fortification underlies Byzantine work, with later Genoese, Venetian and Ottoman changes still visible across the broad enclosure. The climb reveals the old port, Romeikos Gialos and the western coast in stages, which makes the route more informative than viewing the walls only from below.
Use the entrance from the Romeikos side and go early or late because the rock, rubble and open slopes become punishing in midday heat. Wear closed shoes and carry water. Fallow deer live within the site: observe from a distance, never feed them and do not block their path. Avoid unstable masonry and confirm any temporary access restrictions locally.
