Ancient sanctuary remains beneath Anafi's defining rock face
The lower Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi is the right destination even for travellers who should not attempt Kalamos. Its precinct occupies the site of the ancient sanctuary of Apollo Aigletes, with reused and surviving stone revealing the long continuity of the place. Above it, the limestone mass rises abruptly enough to give scale to the island's eastern edge before any step is taken towards the upper monastery.
Treat the monastery as an active religious space. Confirm visiting access, cover shoulders and knees, keep voices low and ask before photographing interiors or worship. The south-coast road ends here, and seasonal buses may run from Chora, but the final return must be checked before exploring nearby paths or the Monastery beach. Carry water because neither a spring nor a seasonal canteen should be assumed. Do not begin the summit route casually from the car park.
