Monastery of the Annunciation

The 1837 Evangelistria monastery crowns Paleo Trikeri, with a courtyard of former cells and surviving associations with the island's women exiles.

Our take

Climb to the island's fortress-like monastery while holding its religious life and exile history in the same view

Built at the island's highest point, Evangelistria encloses a graceful courtyard within walls that appear almost defensive. The site is cared for by island residents rather than a resident monastic community. During the years of women's political exile, the monastery and surrounding structures became part of an exceptionally difficult history.

Walk up before the heat, dress respectfully and confirm whether the church and courtyard are open. Do not enter locked cells or reduce exile memory to atmospheric photography. Modest overnight accommodation has sometimes been arranged here, but it must be confirmed directly and should not be assumed.
