Fortifications, cisterns and chapels in Kastellorizo's exposed interior

Paleokastro is not the harbour castle under another name. It stands inland on the older acropolis of Megisti and preserves layers of fortification, later defensive work, small churches and a notable group of cisterns. The site explains how island life depended on defensible high ground and stored water long before the restored waterfront became Kastellorizo's dominant image. Give it time to read rather than treating the view as the sole objective.

The municipality describes both road access and a shorter but steep uphill walk. Whichever route you choose, go early or near sunset, take water and wear closed shoes on loose limestone. There is no promise that every chapel is open or every edge protected. Stay off walls, cistern rims and unstable masonry, and carry a torch if dusk is close. Drivers should confirm the current road and turn space before taking an unsuitable rental vehicle uphill.
