Find unfinished column drums beside the sea where ancient marble was cut, shaped and prepared for an Aegean voyage
Petrokopio is Fournoi's clearest land-based archaeological site. Extraction marks and abandoned architectural pieces show that stone was shaped near its loading point, making the beach part workshop and part harbour. The large column drums give the operation a physical scale that a museum label cannot, and the coastal setting explains why the quarry worked here.
The marble is protected archaeology, not seating, a picnic table or a source of souvenirs. Do not climb, move fragments, chalk surfaces or fly a drone without permission. Wear closed shoes and keep children beside an adult around cut faces and loose stone. Bring downloaded context because interpretation may be limited, then assess the adjacent water separately before swimming.
