Join a village feast without treating it as a show
A panigyri is a community feast tied to a saint's day, not a performance scheduled for tourists. Villages serve food and local wine, musicians play the Ikariotikos and the dancing may continue until morning. The calendar spreads across the year but becomes especially dense in July and August, with Christos Raches among the better-known dates.
Check the current village announcement rather than relying on an old annual list, arrive ready to share tables and follow the pace of local dancers. Carry cash and accept that food service can be slow at peak times. Most importantly, arrange a sober driver, taxi or nearby bed before drinking; Ikaria's dark mountain roads are not a safe afterthought.
