Kastoria Peninsula Lake Circuit

The small lake circuit links mansion districts, the Dragon Cave, Mavriotissa Monastery, bird habitat and changing views of Kastoria's shores.

Our take

Follow the water around the peninsula for the city's most revealing half-day walk

The peninsula circuit is Kastoria's essential outdoor route because it joins places that otherwise feel separate. From the urban waterfront, the road narrows beneath plane trees, passes Dragon Cave and reaches Mavriotissa before returning through the old districts. Reeds, fishing activity and waterbirds shift with season and weather, so the same route looks different in winter fog and summer light.

The circuit is roughly nine kilometres depending on detours. Walk in daylight, wear visible clothing where pavement narrows and never stop in the vehicle lane for photographs. Do not feed birds or approach nests, and keep dogs controlled. In freezing conditions, shaded sections can hold ice. Cycling is possible for confident riders, but pedestrians, cars and blind bends require a slow pace.
