Begin with the icons before looking for their churches across the old city
Kastoria's many small churches can blur together without preparation. The museum gives them structure through icons from the twelfth to eighteenth centuries, arranged around Byzantine production, post-Byzantine change and local workshops. Processional and devotional paintings reveal both technical differences and the wealth of a city connected to wider Balkan trade.
Visit early in the trip, then use the displays to choose churches and neighbourhoods rather than trying to enter every chapel. The museum currently closes on Tuesday, but official listings show inconsistent seasonal hours, so confirm before arrival. The renovated building lists parking, lift-related access and visitor facilities; ask directly about any specific need. Allow at least ninety minutes for the permanent display.
