Dispilio Lake Settlement

An open-air interpretation site at Dispilio reconstructs parts of the Neolithic lakeside settlement excavated near Lake Orestiada's southern shore.

Our take

Put the modern lakeside city beside a reconstructed Neolithic community on the same shore

Dispilio extends Kastoria's story far beyond churches and mansions. Reconstructed timber-and-reed dwellings help visitors picture how a late Neolithic community used the lake edge, while interpretation connects the structures with excavation evidence rather than presenting them as original surviving huts. The setting also makes water, fishing and seasonal lake levels part of the explanation.

The open-air site publishes different summer and winter hours and can close in severe weather, so verify the day before driving out. Sun, rain and wind affect the route; bring protection appropriate to the season. The official listing indicates parking, paid entry and facilities for disabled visitors, but confirm the condition of outdoor paths for specific mobility needs. Allow about an hour.
