A volcanic route linking Nikia, the caldera and Emporeios
Walking is the most coherent way to understand how Nisyros's settlements relate to the volcano. Routes from Nikia and Emporeios follow old tracks above or towards the Lakki caldera, passing dry terraces, chapels and changing rock before the crater field comes into view. A local guide adds geological context and helps distinguish a historic path from an unsafe shortcut.
This is exposed, hot terrain with limited water and inconsistent waymarking. Start early, carry more water than expected, wear closed shoes and avoid walking alone in extreme heat or uncertain weather. Never cross closed crater areas or approach steaming ground outside authorised routes. Arrange transport at the far end rather than assuming a bus, share the route with someone and use an experienced guide if navigation or volcanic conditions are unfamiliar.
