Black volcanic pebbles beneath Mandraki's castle hill
Chochlaki begins where Mandraki's last lanes meet the foot of the castle hill. Rounded black volcanic stones cover the shore and make the water look intensely blue, while the monastery of Panagia Spiliani sits above the northern end. Its proximity to town makes it easy to combine with the archaeological museum or Paleokastro without committing to another island drive.
The same stones that create the view make entry awkward, especially when swell rolls onto the west coast. Wear water shoes, keep clear of the cliff and do not assume calm conditions because the beach is beside town. There is no reliable lifeguard or full beach service; bring water and use Mandraki's cafés and public facilities before walking over. The sunset is excellent, but the shore becomes harder to cross in low light.
