Monumental volcanic-stone walls above Mandraki
Paleokastro is easy to underestimate from town. Up close, the scale and precision of its dark volcanic-stone blocks reveal a fortification designed to surround ancient Nisyros, with surviving stretches and towers giving more architectural substance than a scattered ruin. The ridge also explains Mandraki's geography and opens views towards Kos and the surrounding sea.
Go early or late because the approach and exposed walls offer little shade. The ground is uneven, edges may be unguarded and loose stones should not be climbed. Closed shoes are preferable, and visitors with limited mobility should ask locally about the closest vehicle access before setting out. Do not remove stone or enter closed areas. Pair the site with the Archaeological Museum in Mandraki to give the walls a clearer historical context.
