Charakas has more sand and easier road access than many Sounion coves, with a mix of seasonal organisation and open public shore.
Our take
A spacious sandy alternative on the road to Sounion
Charakas occupies a broad bay before Cape Sounion, far enough from Athens to feel less urban but easy to reach from the coastal road. The beach has room for both organised seating and independent umbrellas, and its sandy entry is friendlier than the rocky coves nearby.
It remains exposed to southerly weather, so clarity and swimming comfort vary with the forecast. Services cluster around concessions rather than spanning the full bay; carry water if choosing a quieter end and use legal roadside access points.
