Cape Sounion · Beach

Sounion Beach

A small sandy bay below Cape Sounion offers calm water and an exceptional temple view, but little room once day visitors arrive.

Our take

Swim beneath the Temple of Poseidon

Sounion Beach sits below the headland crowned by the Temple of Poseidon. The angle is the reason to come: swimmers look back toward the columns, while sunset turns the cape into the dominant feature of the bay. The beach itself is compact and partly occupied by seasonal hotel and taverna seating.

Combine the swim with the archaeological site, but allow time to move between the two by road rather than attempting an informal climb. Arrive before the late-afternoon tour traffic for easier parking and a less compressed patch of sand.
