Prassa Beach

Prassa pairs white mineral sand with bright turquoise water on Kimolos's north-east coast, but wind and the rough final road matter as much as the photographs.

Our take

Choose Kimolos's palest shore when the north-easterly exposure is working in your favour

Prassa is the island's most visually distinctive beach, where pale bentonite-rich ground makes the water appear almost luminous. It is worth the drive when the sea is settled, yet its exposed position means a strong northerly can turn a beautiful plan into an uncomfortable one. Check conditions in Chorio before setting out and keep another coast in reserve rather than insisting on a particular day.

Summer can bring a canteen, loungers and more traffic, but the level and cost of service change. Carry water and shade regardless, and ask the rental company whether your vehicle is permitted on the current approach. Do not enter quarry or industrial ground near the route. The shallows can look gentle while wind builds chop, so supervise children closely and never assume lifeguard cover.
