A stone church anchoring Soufli's upper Karkatsilia quarter
Built in the upper Karkatsilia quarter and completed in 1848, Agios Athanasius is an important stop because it places Soufli's prosperity in a living neighbourhood. The stone exterior, bell tower and carved iconostasis belong to the same nineteenth-century town as the cocoon houses, but express community and religious life rather than production. Approach through the surrounding streets instead of treating it as a detached monument.
This is an active Orthodox church without guaranteed tourist opening hours. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, enter quietly when open and do not photograph worshippers, services or the iconostasis without permission. The hill and uneven pavement may be tiring in heat, while church steps may limit access. Combine it with the upper-town architecture walk and return downhill towards the museums rather than attempting to park at every doorway.
