A city stretched along a mountain ridge above Santorini
Ancient Thera replaces Santorini’s Bronze Age story with a later city built along a severe ridge. Its street, houses, sanctuaries, theatre and inscriptions reveal occupation from the Archaic through Roman periods, while the position explains both defence and the physical limits placed on urban life.
Access is the practical issue. The road is steep and winding, opening arrangements can be affected by weather, and the site itself involves exposed walking on uneven ground. Confirm current transport rather than improvising the climb. Allow two hours once at the entrance and avoid high wind or midday heat. Pair it with Kamari or Perissa; Akrotiri deserves a separate half-day.
