Read Amorgos's inland capital from its windmills and church lanes before climbing the castle rock
Amorgos hid its main settlement inland for protection, and Chora still rewards wandering without a checklist. Begin near Loza square, pass chapels built into corners and climb toward the windmills for the clearest view of the town's compact form. The castle rock rises through the houses, but access to the upper remains can be restricted and should never be improvised around a locked gate.
Visit in the morning for errands and quieter lanes, then return after dusk when tavernas and small bars open. Stone paving, irregular steps and strong gusts make the upper route unsuitable for flimsy shoes. The windmills are historic structures, not climbing frames, and some lanes end at private homes. Allow two hours for an unhurried circuit, using the signed public route and keeping voices low in residential passages late at night.
