Climb the cliff stairs early for Amorgos's defining monument and a living monastic visit
Hozoviotissa is not simply a facade seen from a viewpoint. The narrow building rises through eight levels against the cliff, and the ascent reveals how little usable ground its builders had. Inside, small passages, icons and the hospitality of the resident brotherhood turn an architectural spectacle into a working religious visit. The scale is intimate rather than grand.
Go at the published morning or late-afternoon visiting period, which changes seasonally, and arrive before heat settles on the exposed steps. Shoulders and knees must be covered; appropriate clothing may be available at the entrance, but bringing your own is more considerate. Carry water, wear shoes with grip and do not attempt the climb if the return down hundreds of steps will be unsafe. Photography inside is controlled, so ask rather than assume.
