The city’s quiet open-air sculpture gallery

Founded in the 19th century, the First Cemetery is both a working burial ground and an extraordinary record of modern Greek public life. Neoclassical mausoleums and sculptures line cypress-shaded paths; Yannoulis Chalepas’s Sleeping Girl is the best-known work, but the value lies in observing how a new capital represented memory, family and status.

Treat the grounds first as a cemetery. Dress and speak respectfully, keep away from active funerals and do not stage intrusive photographs. A municipal guided walk, when offered, is the best way to understand the art and people without reducing the place to an atmospheric detour.
