GB Roof Garden

Hotel Grande Bretagne’s eighth-floor restaurant pairs a formal Athens address with an unusually complete view, spanning Parliament, Lycabettus Hill and the illuminated Acropolis.

Our take

Dinner above Syntagma, with the Acropolis opposite

GB Roof Garden is the useful kind of grand-hotel restaurant: the setting earns the reservation before the kitchen has to. From the eighth floor of Hotel Grande Bretagne, the view reaches over Syntagma Square towards the Acropolis, with Lycabettus Hill and the city’s dense roofscape completing the frame. It is particularly well judged for a first evening, when crossing town for dinner would add effort to a long travel day.

The cooking is contemporary Mediterranean rather than ceremonial hotel fare, and the room moves from bright daytime terrace to a more polished evening atmosphere. Ask for an outdoor table with a clear Acropolis sightline, but accept the maître d’s advice when wind or heat makes the glass-fronted interior more comfortable. Reserve well ahead, observe the current evening dress guidance and reconfirm the terrace request rather than treating it as guaranteed.
