Its compact Byzantine church, cloister and monastic buildings sit around a cool courtyard on Mount Hymettus, where the noise and hard surfaces of the centre give way to forest. Frescoes and reused ancient material show how the site accumulated meaning across centuries.

Pair the monument with a short walk rather than driving up only for a photograph.
