Walk Gaios as a harbour system, following the channel between town, Agios Nikolaos and Panagia before the excursion crowds arrive
Gaios is not merely the place where the ferry stops. The town faces a narrow channel sheltered by Agios Nikolaos and Panagia, so the waterfront unfolds in sections rather than one open bay. Fishing boats, excursion craft and visiting yachts share the same edge, while lanes behind it hold the island museum, churches, bakeries and practical shops. Walk early or after the last day boats leave, beginning at the ferry side and continuing past the main square without treating private moorings as public promenades. Stone can be slick beside the water and delivery traffic still uses narrow lanes. The castle on Agios Nikolaos is not an invitation to land independently; check current authorised access. Park outside the compact core and leave quays clear for working boats and emergency use.
