Old Kardamyli Village Walk

Old Kardamyli's lanes, tower houses and churches form a rewarding walk above the modern village, with the Mourtzinos museum visited as a separate timed stop.

Our take

A short uphill walk that separates the lived-in old quarter from its ticketed fortress

Old Kardamyli begins before the museum gate. Walk uphill from the modern centre and slow down among stone houses, walls, small churches and views back towards the sea. The fortified Mourtzinos complex is the principal monument, but the surrounding settlement explains how defence, family compounds and ordinary village life shared the same slope. Give the public lanes time before or after the museum rather than treating both as one photograph.

The route includes uneven stone, gradients and little shade. Go early or late, wear secure shoes and carry water even though the distance is short. Homes and courtyards remain private; stay on public ways, keep entrances clear and ask before photographing residents. Museum hours do not define access to every lane, but dusk changes the footing and lighting. Return with a torch if dinner keeps you uphill after dark.
