A vast sea cave where the skipper and conditions must set the limits
Papanikolis opens into the western side of Meganisi's long southern peninsula, well beyond the island's village road network. Its scale is best understood from a small boat, but the popular story that a submarine hid inside during the Second World War is local tradition rather than the reason to visit. Light, rock and water make the place compelling without embellishment.
Book a licensed local skipper and ask whether the trip is a private charter, beach transfer or group excursion. Cave entry depends on swell, wind, vessel size and traffic at the mouth; accept a view from outside when the skipper judges that safer. Do not expect every trip to include swimming or landing on the small interior beach. Bring sun protection for the approach, wear a lifejacket and never jump near rock or another manoeuvring boat.
