Watch a major migration corridor without disrupting research
Antikythera's north-south position turns a small island into an important rest point and observation corridor. Spring brings northbound passerines and raptors after long sea crossings; autumn movement follows a different rhythm as birds head south. The Hellenic Ornithological Society runs Greece's only bird observatory here and has documented more than 200 migrant species, alongside a significant Eleonora's falcon population.
Independent birdwatching does not include automatic access to ringing sessions, nets or research buildings. Use binoculars from public roads and open ground, keep well away from marked equipment and never flush resting birds for a photograph. Formal volunteering requires an application and substantial time commitment. Carry water, avoid trampling fields and ask the observatory about current public-awareness opportunities rather than appearing unannounced at dawn.
