Antikythera's remote 1926 lighthouse at the southern cape

Built in 1926, the Apolytara lighthouse marks the island's southern extreme above the open passage towards Crete. Its isolated stone complex and absence of surrounding development convey Antikythera's maritime position more strongly than an easy roadside viewpoint could. Paths approach from the southern hamlets, while the coast may also be seen from a locally arranged boat in suitable weather.

The lighthouse is not a casual walk from Potamos. The overland route is long, exposed and poorly supplied, with no shade, drinking water or guaranteed phone signal. Ask the community which path is currently passable, start early, carry an offline route and turn back before heat or wind becomes a problem. The building may not be open; never cross barriers or assume boat landing is possible.
