Harbour-side remains that explain ancient Aigila's name
At the head of Xiropotamos cove, wall fragments and rock-cut steps survive from the harbour installations and sanctuary associated with ancient Aigila. A dedicatory statue of Apollo Aigilieus was discovered here in 1880 and is now held in Athens. The remains are modest, but their position below Kastro makes the ancient settlement's movement between sea, worship and defence unusually easy to understand.
There is no museum-style circuit, ticket office or guarantee that individual structures will be obvious without prior reading. Use the visit as part of the wider Xiropotamos and Kastro walk, stay on established ground and do not touch or collect material. Heat, loose stone and limited shade are more important practical concerns than distance. Confirm local conditions if excavation work is active.
