The island's patron church and strongest living tradition
The church of Agios Myron stands among trees in the island's interior, where tradition places the discovery of the saint's icon by Cretan hunters before permanent resettlement. Its late-eighteenth-century origins connect the building to families arriving from Kissamos and Sfakia. Inside, the silver-covered iconostasis and patron's icon carry a living devotional importance that matters more than architectural grandeur.
The feast on 17 August can bring returning Antikytherians and visitors together, changing accommodation and transport demand on an otherwise quiet island. Dress respectfully, avoid interrupting services and ask before photographing the interior. At other times the church may not be open on demand, so confirm locally rather than making a special journey on the assumption of access.
