A fortified city above the island's ancient harbour
Ancient Aigila occupies a naturally defended hill above Xiropotamos. Substantial stretches of fortification, building traces and the steep relationship between acropolis and harbour make the site legible without a reconstructed visitor centre. Below, a shipshed cut into the rock is one of the most unusual surviving features. The route turns a small cove into a compact lesson in how this exposed island controlled the sea lane between Crete and the Peloponnese.
Treat Kastro as an open archaeological landscape, not a surfaced attraction. The path is rough, shade is limited and drops or loose stone demand secure footwear. Carry water and avoid the climb in peak heat or strong wind. Do not move pottery, climb walls or improvise shortcuts across fragile remains. Current access and any excavation restrictions should be checked in Potamos before setting out.
