Vlychada Beach

Vlychada is quieter than Santorini's eastern resorts, with dark sand and sculpted pale cliffs that require respectful distance and a calm forecast.

Our take

A dark beach beneath Santorini's wind-carved cliffs

Vlychada's pale volcanic cliffs have been cut into fluted shapes by wind and rain, creating an unusual backdrop to a long dark shore. A small organised section begins near the marina; walking west brings more open space and a clothing-optional tradition toward the far end.

Do not sit against or climb the friable cliffs, where falling material is a real hazard. Services fade quickly beyond the entrance, the sand becomes hot, and southerly weather can make the exposed water rough.
