Koventareios Municipal Library of Kozani

Kozani's major municipal library preserves rare books, manuscripts, maps and local archives in a modern cultural complex close to the city centre.

Our take

See why a western Macedonian trading city invested so heavily in books, maps and community memory across several centuries

The Koventareios is more than an attractive room of old books. Its collection grew from Kozani's strong educational tradition and links to merchant communities abroad, preserving manuscripts, early printed works, maps and Greek and Ottoman documentation important to local history. The current purpose-built complex, completed in 2018, gives those holdings space alongside reading, research and cultural functions.

This is a working library, so confirm which exhibition areas are open to casual visitors and do not expect unrestricted access to rare material. Carry identification if requesting research services and follow staff rules on bags, photography and handling. The modern building is the most promising central cultural site for step-free access, but contact it directly for a specific need. Pair the visit with the nearby folklore museum to balance written records with objects and lived experience.
