Use a long-running central restaurant to taste Kozani saffron and regional comfort dishes without turning the spice into a gimmick
Trypokarydos is useful after a city walk because its menu moves between familiar grill dishes and food specific to western Macedonia. Look for stuffed cabbage leaves, batzio cheese, local tsipouro and dishes that use Kozani saffron in sauce, soup or rice. Sharing several plates gives a clearer sense of the kitchen than ordering an international-style burger simply because the venue also presents itself as a beer bar.
The restaurant's own site lists daily opening and a central Mourati Street address, but confirm hours around holidays and Carnival. Ask which dishes are freshly prepared and state allergies clearly; saffron recipes may also contain dairy, nuts or dried fruit. Prices and menu items can change from the online list. If sampling tsipouro or the broad beer selection, walk back to a central hotel or use a taxi rather than driving to an outlying property.
