Nikis Square is the right orientation point because Kozani's story radiates from it. Agios Nikolaos became the city's cathedral, while the adjacent clock tower grew into the most recognisable element of the skyline. The surrounding pedestrian streets lead quickly to the market, library and historical museum, revealing a compact regional capital shaped by commerce, education and civic life rather than a collection of isolated monuments.
Give the centre a morning or early-evening circuit and enter the church only when services permit. Dress respectfully, keep conversation low and ask before photographing interiors. The square itself is level, but individual historic buildings may have steps. Carnival brings an entirely different atmosphere and heavy crowds; at other times, linger over coffee and use the city centre as the calm first chapter before driving to saffron villages or Lake Polyfytos.
