Pause at the island's parish church to see how a very small community holds continuity beyond the summer harbour
Agios Ioannis gives Kastos a point of history beyond beaches and yacht arrivals. The substantial parish church dates from the nineteenth century, while a vaulted structure below has been interpreted as a possible early Christian tomb. Its relationship with the cemetery makes the site part of ongoing island memory, not simply an architectural object.
Opening cannot be assumed. Ask in the village and visit quietly if access is offered. Dress respectfully, silence phones and do not photograph graves, worshippers or the interior without permission. Never attempt to reach underground fabric independently or move covers. Paths and thresholds may be uneven, and funeral or feast-day needs always take precedence over sightseeing.
