Panagia Spiliani Monastery

Panagia Spiliani occupies a cave beneath the Knights' castle above Mandraki, reached by a long stair and still central to Nisyros's August religious festival.

Our take

Mandraki's cave sanctuary above the sea

The white monastery seen above Mandraki is built around a cave sanctuary beneath the remains of a medieval castle. The climb moves from town lanes to broad sea views before entering a cooler, intimate interior where the icon of the Virgin is the focus. Its importance is living rather than decorative, particularly during the August celebrations that draw worshippers from across the Dodecanese.

Dress for an active place of worship, keep voices low and ask before photographing the interior. The long stair is strenuous and not step-free; start slowly in hot weather and carry water. Festival dates bring crowds and altered access, while normal opening hours can change. Combine the climb with Chochlaki below, but descend before the pebbled shore becomes difficult to cross in darkness.
