Tavropolion Sanctuary at Nas

Tavropolion preserves the floor and scattered remains of an ancient sanctuary of Artemis beside the old harbour and Chalaris estuary at Nas.

Our take

The fragmentary sanctuary above Nas river mouth

The ruins at Nas mark a sanctuary dedicated to Artemis Tauropolos beside what was once an ancient harbour. Little of the temple stands above ground: the floor, quay traces and scattered marble fragments require attention and context. The meeting of archaeological remains, river gorge and open sea explains why the site matters more clearly than a reconstruction could.

Reach it by descending the same long steps used for Nas Beach. The outdoor site is free, but has no toilet, shop, organised tour or accessible route. Do not climb on masonry or remove fragments, and keep back from unstable edges. If you continue to the beach, treat the strong current warnings as a separate and serious decision.
