A small cove below Antikythera's ancient city
Xiropotamos sits in a narrow inlet on the island's northeast coast. Its small shore mixes pebble, coarse sand and rock, while the surrounding slopes carry the remains of ancient Aigila's harbour. Rock-cut steps and the rare surviving shipshed make the bay far more than a swimming stop. The climb towards Kastro begins close by, so cooler morning hours can combine archaeology with a swim.
Nothing here is organised. Bring drinking water, food, shade and shoes suitable for loose ground, and leave every ancient stone where it lies. The final path and uneven shore are not step-free. Wind can enter the inlet and there is no lifeguard, so assess the water rather than assuming the enclosed shape guarantees safety. Allow enough daylight for the return to Potamos.
