An island sanctuary reached only with a planned boat crossing
Across the southern channel, archaeologists have uncovered an important Archaic sanctuary of Apollo on Despotiko. Its position among sea routes helps explain why the complex developed here, while reconstructed architectural elements make the scale easier to understand than scattered foundations alone. The visit gives Antiparos an archaeological dimension that is easy to miss when the island is treated only as a beach extension of Paros.
Despotiko is a protected, actively managed site, not a beach where visitors can land independently wherever they choose. Access is by authorised boat from the Agios Georgios area and depends on weather, operating dates and archaeological rules. Confirm that the trip includes legal site access, ask about shade and walking surfaces, carry water, and follow the guide's boundaries. Sea-cave or swimming stops may be separate from the sanctuary visit.
