A lived-in fortified quarter at the heart of Chora
The Kastro sits just behind Chora's main lane. Built as a Venetian residential fortification, it organised houses around a square courtyard and turned their outer walls into a defensive perimeter. Later buildings softened that geometry, but the Gothic gateway, churches and tightly fitted homes still make the original idea legible when you slow down and walk the full circuit.
This remains a residential neighbourhood rather than an open-air museum. Enter quietly, keep doorways and lanes clear, and do not photograph people or private interiors without permission. Uneven paving, narrow passages and occasional steps limit accessibility. The Kastro needs no long appointment: combine a cooler morning circuit with the harbour, or pass through before sunset at Sifneiko and return to the main street for dinner.
