Athens at the city wall, cemetery and road to Eleusis
Kerameikos explains how ancient Athens met the world beyond its walls. The Dipylon was the city’s formal gate, the Sacred Gate opened onto the procession route to Eleusis, and the ground outside became its most important cemetery. Tomb monuments, road surfaces and the small Eridanos river give the site an unusually coherent landscape.
Visit the compact museum first to see original funerary sculpture before finding replicas in the cemetery. The site is quieter than the Agora and rewards ninety unhurried minutes, especially in spring when the vegetation softens the ruins. Paths include slopes and rough surfaces. Pair it with the Agora or the modern neighbourhood, not with an urgent cross-city schedule.
