A journey worth taking slowly
A route that changes character every day
This trip begins with a serious archaeological destination and ends in two harbour towns where the pleasure is proportion rather than a checklist. Delphi needs an unhurried visit; Galaxidi and Nafpaktos need evenings. Keeping the route linear prevents a final day dominated by retracing the same road.
Approach Delphi in daylight. Mountain weather and bends deserve attention, particularly after rain or in winter. Stay nearby so the archaeological site can be visited early, then descend towards Galaxidi after lunch. Its maritime houses, small museums and waterfront reward a night even though the town is compact.
The coastal finish
The road towards Nafpaktos follows the northern Gulf of Corinth with frequent reasons to stop. Resist turning every beach or village into an appointment. Nafpaktos has a small Venetian harbour, castle slopes and a living town beyond the postcard centre. Parking immediately beside the harbour is the wrong goal; use a larger signed area and walk.
Getting home
The route works best with a one-way rental continued towards Patras or with an onward western-Greece itinerary. If the car must return to Athens, add roughly three hours from Nafpaktos and motorway tolls, and do not attach that drive to an international flight without a large buffer.
Driving notes
Build in time for unplanned stops, refuel before mountain stretches, and avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar rural roads.
